Kanpur (Cawnpore) was founded in 1803 and is found on the banks of the Ganges River. At 5.1 million people, it is the 11th largest metropolitan area in India. The population density is 20 000 people per square kilometer.
It is famous for its colonial architecture, gardens, parks, and fine quality leather products which are exported mostly to the West.
It is considered one of the world's most polluted cities in the world based on particulate matter concentration. In fact, in 2018, the World Health Organization declared it the city with the worst air pollution.
