The sender is from North Carolina, but she purchased her card from Nebraska, where her son lives. This is a watercolour created by William Henry Jackson showing Buffalo Bill Cody. According the the card:  For 18 months the Pony Express carried the mail from St. Joseph, Missouri, through Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and ending in Sacramento, California. Buffalo Bill Cody made the longest non-stop ride of 322 miles over one of the most dangerous portions of the entire trail in 21 hours and 40 minutes using 21 horses. 

A great card from the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming.  William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody was born in 1948 in Iowa Territory. Soon after he was born the family moved back to Cody's father's hometown in Toronto Township, Upper Canada (Mississauga , Ontario today). Cody's father was anti-slavery so when they moved back to the United States, he would speak out against it. This led to death threats.  Eleven year old Bill had to take a job as a "boy extra" with a freight carrier after his father died. At 14 he decided to travel to California to mine for gold. On the way, though, he joined up with the Pony Express. Cody joined the Union Army during the American Civil War and worked as a teamster with Company H, 7th Kansas Cavalry. He was discharged soon after the war's end. He re-joined the army in 1868 as a dispatch rider, and then as the Chief of Scouts for the 5th Cavalry Regiment and 3rd Cavalry.  He won the Medal of Honor in 1872 during the I...

Kimberly mentions a television show from the 1970s called the Medicine Hat Stallion  starring then teen heartthrob, Leif Garrett. The Medicine Hat Stallion was actually a made for television movie from November 1977. It takes place in pre-Civil War Nebraska Territory with a 15 year old son and his father, mother, and Grandma Lundy. His father treats him poorly as he is unhappy with his life at their prairie trading post. Garrett's character raises a foal that was left at the trading post in lieu of payment of goods. When the horse becomes old enough, Garrett's character and the horse earn a job with the Pony Express. It is through this tough job that Garrett's character earns the respect of his father. The movie was based on the novel San Domingo, The Medicine Hat Stallion  by Marguerite Henry. It was a Newberry Medal winning book.
