Lelystad is a new city established in 1967. It was build on reclaimed land. Lelystad are actually five metres below sea level. It was named after Cornelis Lely, who engineered the Afsluitdijk, making the reclamation possible.  Afsluitdijk is a major dam and causeway constructed between 1927 and 1932 and runs from the Den Oever in North Holland to the village of Zurich in Friesland. It is 32 km long and 90 m wide, and 7.25 m above sea level. The Afsluitdijk dams off the Zuiderzee, a salt water inlet of the North Sea, and turning it into a fresh water lake of the IJsselmeer. It also serves as a sea barrier to protect the inland against flooding. The highway on top of the dyke has a 130 km/h speed limit.
