4229 - Toruń, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Poland

Everyone has heard about the Leaning Tower of Pisa. But have you heard about the Leaning Tower of  Toruń? This UNESCO World Heritage Site and Historic Monument of Poland leans 1.5 metres where it should be. It was built in the 12th century to defend the town. It was made up of brick, but built on loamy ground. By the 18th century, the lean was enough to no longer use it as a defensive asset. It was converted into a women's prison for a time, then used as a blacksmith shop, and an apartment for a gunsmith. There used to be a tourist shop there in the 1970s and 80s, and now it houses the  Toruń Cultural Department.
