South Orange is a village of 16 400 people and is about 22 kilometers from New York City. The territory that South Orange is found was purchased by Robert Treat, the eventual founder of Newark, New Jersey, from the Lenape in 1666. The first English settlement is disputed. One account records it as 1677 by the brothers Joseph and Thomas Brown, whereas another account says it was in 1680 by Nathaniel Wheeler, Edward Riggs, and Joseph Riggs. The card shows the South Orange Fire House. It was built in 1926. It was closed in 2002 after the discovery of asbestos in the structure, but was renovated and re-opened a few years later.
