This is a hand-tinted photograph entitled The Rebel  (1991) by Shelley Niro. Niro is an Indigenous filmmaker and visual artist from Canada. She was born in Niagara Falls, New York, in 1954, but grew up on the Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve near Brantford, Ontario. Niro grew up entertaining her siblings with songs, storytelling, and picture drawing. Her family would make appearances in her art.  Niro is a member of the Turtle Clan of the Kanienkehaka (Mohawk Nation) from Six Nations of the Grand River.  The model on The Rebel  was Niro's mother. The photo can be found in the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Québec.
