Bologna is an ancient city in Italy. There is evidence of humans in the area dating back to the 3rd millennium BCE. Bologna itself has been sacked, destroyed, and rebuilt several times in its history. Today it is the seventh largest city in Italy with metropolitan population of over a million people.  The University of Bologna was founded in 1088 and is the oldest university in continuous operation in the world. It was also the first to offer a degree from an institution of higher learning. Today it boasts over 90 000 students and is one of the largest universities in Europe.
