Chennai is home to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), a professional Twenty20 cricket team that competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team was one of the original eight franchises when the league was established in 2008 and plays its home matches at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium . CSK has won five IPL titles, making it one of the most successful teams in the league’s history, and has appeared in 10 finals. The team was suspended for two seasons following its involvement in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing and betting case . In January 2022, CSK became the first unicorn sports enterprise—meaning a startup valued at over US$1 billion. Today, the franchise is valued at approximately US$1.15 billion. The M. A. Chidambaram Stadium is one of the oldest cricket venues in India. Established in 1916, it has undergone several renovations and upgrades over the years and now has a seating capacity of around 38 200 spectators.

This card comes from Pattukkottai   பட்டுக்கோட்டை, a city of 73 000 in south east India.  The card, though, is about Odisha, a state located just north of Tamil Nadu. Odisha has 42 million people. On the card is some of the things that Odisha is known for. Great photo of an Asian elephant. They have trunks of up to two metres in length, which can twist freely, just like hands of a human. Elephants can used their trunks to drink water, roll up food, and even grip branches of tall trees.  Asian elephants are Asia's largest land animal. They are highly intelligent and self-aware, and can display behaviours associated with grief, learning, and greeting. They are found in the Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia, from India in the west, to Borneo in the east, and Nepal in the north to Sumatra in the south.  Asian elephants have been listed as endangered since 1986. It is threatened by loss of habitat, habitat degradation, fragmentation, and poaching. 

The sender took this photo himself on a camping trip to Kolukkumalai. All the green are tea plantations.  Thrissur is a city of 315 000 people, but a part of a metropolitan area with 3.7 million people. It is known as the Cultural Capital of Kerala. There are cultural traditions that date back centuries. The Thrissur Pooram is an annual Hindu temple festival. It attract upwards of a million people.  The Maharaja of Cochin (1790-1805), Sakthan Thampuran, came up with the idea of the Thrissur Pooram. 

The sender writes: the motto of India is - Satyameva Jayate (Truth Alone Triumphs). He also says "don't look for happiness, create it. Happiness is not perfect until it is shared.  Bengaluru is home to Royal Challengers Bengaluru of the Indian Premier League (Twenty20 Cricket). It was founded in 2008 and play at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. After finishing as the runners up thrice - 2009, 2011, and 2016 - they finally won their first title in 2025. 

A nice World Postcard Day meetup card from Bengaluru. By the looks of the signatures and ink stamps, there were about six people at this one. 

This great Pixar card is coming from a police officer in Dehradun. There are almost 900 000 people in this metropolitan area of northern India.  The Uttarakhand Police headquarters are found here. The Director General of Police, Deepam Seth, is the head of the force, while the district is headed by a Deputy Inspector General of Police. There are 13 districts within the Uttarakhand Police. 

The sender is from Bengaluru, but the card comes from Hunder. The card reads: Nubra is a tri-armed valley located to the north east of Ladakh Valley. The Shyok River meets the Nubra River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. The Shyok River is a tributary of the Indus River. The average altitude of the valley is about 10 000 ft about the sea level. The common way to access the valley is to travel over the Khardung La from Leh town. In the picture is a small yet beautiful privately funded school in Hunder village. 

Bangalore (Bengaluru) is the capital city and largest city in the Indian state of Karnataka with almost 8.5 million people. It was established in 1537 by Kempe Gowda I. Kempe Gowda I (Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda) was a governor under the Vijayanagara Empire. He ruled as governor for 46 years. His tomb was accidentally re-discovered in March 2015 by Prashanth Marur, an amateur historian. Professional historians authenticated the discovery. It is believed the tomb was built by Kempe Gowda II. 

This card is a part of a series entitled Invaluable Treasures of Incredible India. The sender works as a chemical laboratory officer in a power plant in Kota  कोटा . Kota is the third largest city in Rajasthan with just over one million people.  This card features Makrana marble. It is a type of white marble that is popular with sculptures and architects in building decor. The Taj Mahal features Makrana marble. Makrana marble is minded in Makrana. 

Mysore is the second most populated city in the state of Karnataka. It was the capital city of the Kingdom of Mysore from 1399 to 1947. There are many palaces in the city and thus has earned the nickname City of Palaces.   Mysore is home to the Mysore Palace, or Amba Vilas Palace. It was the official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty and the seat of power in the Kingdom of Mysore. Construction started on the palace in 1897 and wasn't completed until 1912. The original palace was build in the 14th century inside the Old Fort. However, because it was always made of wood, it was set ablaze several times. The current structure was built of stone, brick, and wood.  It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in India. In 2014, 3 million visitors made their way to the palace. 

I think this card is from the 1970s because on the back Sri Lanka has Ceylon in brackets after it. Sri Lanka changed its name from Ceylon in 1972. This card is from a PhD student from Tezpur. The card is of the Botanical Gardens found in Peradeniya, Kandy, Sri Lanka.  Tezpur is located in norther India on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. There are about 102 000 people who live here.  

A nice card from Manosankar. I think he's into butterflies. Butterflies are the second most celebrated insects in the world. India is home to over 1300 species of butterflies with major populations in the north east of India. This A-Z card represents few butterflies from the Western Gnats of India which is habitat to over 340 species. 

This card comes from a Women in Nature (in India) series. The series features the following: Vandana Shiva - Gandhi of Grain. Shiva is a scholar, environmental activist, food sovereignty advocate, ecofeminist, and anti-globalization author. Much of her activism is with the anit-GMO movement. Padma Shri Tulsi Gowda - Encyclopedia of the Forest. Gowda is an Indian environmentalist. She has planted more than 30 000 saplings and looks after the nurseries of the Forest Department. Her title "Padma Shri" is actually the fourth highest civilian award that can be bestowed by the Indian Government.  Padma Shri Rahibai Popere - Seed Mother. Popere is a farmer and conservationist. She helps other farmers return to native varieties of crops. She was one of three Indians named to the BBC list of "100 Women 2018." Padma Shri Saalumarada Thimmakka - Mother of the Trees. Thimmakka in a environmentalist noted for her work in planting and tending to 385 bantan trees along a 45 km st...

Cricket is the most popular sport in Bengaluru. Many player who have played or are on the national team come from Bengaluru. The Royal Challengers Bangalore play in the Indian Premier League. The team was founded in 2008 and have been the league runners up three times. 

Kazhikode, or Calicut as it is known in English, is a city along the west coast of India. It has a population of 610 000 people, and 2 million in its metropolitan area.  The postcard shows Indian rhinoceros. I didn't know there were rhinoceros outside of Africa. Apparently there are three species of Asian rhinos.  Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) is native to the Indian subcontinent. It is list as "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List. There are an estimated 3588 individuals in the world, and Kaziranga National Park has about 2048 of those. Poaching remains a problem as their horns are wanted for their ivory. 

Bengaluru, or Bangalore, is a megacity of eight million people, with 11 million in the metropolitan area. It is India's third largest city by population (27th in the world). Bangalore is an anglicised verstion of the city's Kannada name,  Bengalūru, and dates back to 890. It was Bangalore for centuries until writer and critic U.R. Ananthamurthy proposed to officially rename Bangalore back to  Bengalūru. It was official on 1 November 2014. Unfortunately for Ananthamurthy, he died in August 2014 and never got to see the official renaming.  The postcard is about She, the tiny, yet mighty, daughter of the endless ocean, barter of love and the queen of eternal peace. 

New Delhi is the seat of all three branches of the government of India. Although it only has a population of 250 000 people, it is a part of the National Capital Region metropolis with almost 29 million people.  This card is a Postcrossing Meetup card from 1 October and a World Postcard Day card. There were only 7 signatures and ink stamps on the back. I hope they had a great time!

Kancheepuram is a city of 300 000 in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is famous for its temples. It is an important tourist destination for domestic and foreign tourists.   Kancheepuram is considered one of the seven holiest cities to Hindus in India. These seven cities are considered sacred ground, a field of active power, a place where moksha (final release) can be obtained. 

This is the second World Postcard Day meetup card from this meetup at the Gandhi Museum in Madurai. The sender, however, is from Aruppukkottai. Aruppukkottai is a small city by Indian standards of 87 000 people. It is noted for its cotton industries, mainly spinning mills.
