Great photo of an Asian elephant. They have trunks of up to two metres in length, which can twist freely, just like hands of a human. Elephants can used their trunks to drink water, roll up food, and even grip branches of tall trees.
Asian elephants are Asia's largest land animal. They are highly intelligent and self-aware, and can display behaviours associated with grief, learning, and greeting. They are found in the Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia, from India in the west, to Borneo in the east, and Nepal in the north to Sumatra in the south.
Asian elephants have been listed as endangered since 1986. It is threatened by loss of habitat, habitat degradation, fragmentation, and poaching.
