This card comes from Beverly , which is located in northeastern Massachusetts. It was first settled in 1626 by English colonists, though the Naumkeag had lived in the area for centuries prior. This card features The Goonies , the 1985 film directed by Richard Donner and written by Chris Columbus , based on a story by Steven Spielberg . When I first received the card, I thought the movie was based on a book; however, the image shown is actually a made-up book cover created for the design. The Goonies starred Sean Astin , Josh Brolin , Jeff Cohen , Corey Feldman , Kerri Green , Martha Plimpton , and Ke Huy Quan . It follows a group of kids who live in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria and call themselves the Goonies. When they discover a treasure map, they set out to find the treasure in hopes of saving their homes from foreclosure due to the expansion of a golf course. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is located in both Washington and Oregon. On the Washington side, in Vancouver, is the reproduction of the original fort. On the Oregon side, in Oregon City, is the former residence of John McLoughlin. The Fort Vancouver national Historic Site was originally built in 1966 as a part of the National Park Service's Mission 66 Program. Mission 66 was a 10 year program to dramatically expanded the Park Services visitor programs in time for the National Park's 50th anniversary in 1966. In 2015 the visitor's centre was renovated into an information centre for both Fort Vancouver and Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Fort Vancouver saw 710 000 visitors (2011). 

Beautiful card of the Oregon coast. My parents have travelled up and down the Oregon coast a couple of times and always rave about it.  Pendleton is not found on the Oregon coast, but in the north east of Oregon. It has a population of just over 17 000 and includes prisoners housed as the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution.  Pendleton's economy is reliant on lower wage hospitality industry jobs with the growth of the Wildhorse Resort and Casino. One in five jobs are in the "Accommodation and Food Services" industry.  Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution is one of 14 state prisons in Oregon. It was originally created in 1912 as a hospital for long-term mental health patients. It was converted to a men's medium security prison in 1983. 

I like these famous women scientist cards you can buy. This one comes from Forest Grove, Oregon, and suburb of Portland.  Hertha Ayrton (1854-1923) was an English electrical engineer, mathematician, physicist, inventor, and a suffragette. She attended Girton College, Cambridge, and studied mathematics and was coached by physicist Richard Glazebrook. She passed the Mathematical Tripos at Cambridge, but they did not grant her an academic degree because they did not award full degrees to women. Instead she passed an external examination at the University of London, which did award her a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1881.  In 1844 she attended evening classes on electricity at Finsbury Technical College. She ended up marrying the instructor, Professor William Edward Ayrton, in 1885. He was a pioneer in electrical engineering and physics education and a fellow of the Royal Society. She assisted him with experiments in physics and electricity, and soon began her own investigations ...

This card comes from the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum (German Mining Museum) in Bochum Germany. This is a bicycle miners either used in the mines, or for getting to and from the mine. 

Milwaukie is a city and suburb of Portland. There are about 21 000 people who call Milwaukie home.  The card comes from Singapore and shows an aeriel view of Ngee Ann Polytechnic  義安理工學院  a post secondary school. It is known for its business programmes and focus on entrepreneurship education. It was founded in 1963 by the Ngee Ann Kongsi, a charitable foundation in Singapore. There were 116 students the first year studying languages, commerce, and technology. Today there are nine academic schools that provide 39 full-time courses to 14 800 students.  www.np.edu.sg

A busy household. The sender says they have five children, five big dogs, five cats, and only four geckos.  Dexter is found in west central Oregon and is an unincorporated community of almost 900 people. The original post office named it Butte Disappointment in 1848. It was renamed Dexter in 1975, by the postmaster's family, after the Dexter brand cook stove in their house.  A claim to fame for Dexter is the nearby Dexter Lake Club was used in the filming of the road trip scene in the movie Animal House .  The card is a great photo of Mount Hood (Wy'east) and Trillium Lake. Mount Hood is an active stratovolcano in the Cascade Range and a member of the Cascade Volcanic Arc. It attracts 10 000 climbers a year and there is a year-round life-served skiing area, the only one in North America.  The United States Geological Survey estimates there is a 3 - 7% chance that Mount Hood will erupt in the next 30 years. 

Locally produced cards are my favourite to buy and to receive. This one is by Meran Marie Myers.  Talent is a city of 6300 people located in south west Oregon. It was first settled by A. P. Tallent, a native of east Tennessee who settled Oregon in the 1870s, and platted the city in the 1880s. Tallent wanted to name the town Wagner, but postal officials overruled him because they preferred Talent (with an L taken out).  In 2020, about a third of Talent was destroyed by the Almeda Drive Fire. In all 2800 home and commericial business were destroyed. It was discovered that the fire was the result of arson. 

A card to promote cycling in Oregon made in the style of the vintage national parks cards. On the back it says, Oregon is known worldwide for having unlimited recreational opportunities. One of the most popular is bicycle riding/touring with hundreds of miles of bike trail, off road areas, and user-friendly bike paths linking the intercity with surrounding communities. 

I'm catching up to my backlog. This one was sent in November 2023. The sender is from Portland, Oregon, and her card is an inspirational one.  Portland was named after Portland, Maine, which was named after the Isle of Portland. The Isle of Portland is 5 km south of Weymouth, England. The island is only 6 km by 2.7 km and has a population of 13 500 people. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a part of the Jurassic Coast. Portland Stone, a limestone, has been used in British and world architecture. St. Paul's Cathedral and the United Nations Headquarters used Portland Stone.  Portland Harbour is one of the largest man-man harbours in the world. Stone breakwaters were put into place between 1848 to 1905. A Royal Navy base was established. Royal Navy and NATO ships exercised here until 1995.

I love these type of cards! The sender is from McMinnville, which is located in the Willamette Valley and along the Yamhill River. It is home to the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum, which houses the Spruce Goose (Hughes H-4 Hercules ), Howard Hughes' flying boat. He built a prototype and wanted to utilize it as a Trans-Atlantic transport plane during World War II. It was completed in time. However, on 2 November 1947, the plane made one brief flight The plane was made from birch wood using the Duramold process. Wartime restrictions on aluminum, and concerns about the weight of the craft were cited for using wood. Critics gave it the name Spruce Goose , but mechanics allegedly gave it the nickname Birch Bitch . The plane was designed to carry 68 000 kg, or 750 fully equiped soldiers, or two 30 ton M4 Sherman tanks.  The Hughes H-4 Hercules would be manned by a crew of 3, be almost 67 m long, and have a wingspan of 98 m. A souvenir card from the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum. It was founded by Arlene and George Wagner in 1995 and it contains over 9000 nutcrackers as of 2023 According the card, there are 44 countries represented at the museum.  Arlene was the first guest on Conan O'Brien's TBS talk show, Conan , on 8 November 2010. O'Brien had an online survey of potential first guests and Wagner beat out Jack Nicholson, Pope Benedict XVI, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga among a few.  Admission to the museum is $5.00 (USD) for adults, $3.50 for senior citizens, $2.00 for youth, and children and active military personell get in for free.

The sender bought this card while travelling in Idaho for a trip. They were hoping to see some elk on their journey but didn't.  Oregon City was established in 1829 by the Hudson's Bay Company when the area belonged to the British. Today it boasts almost 38 000 people and is located just south of Portland.  Dr John McLoughlin established the fort for the Hudson's Bay Company. Besides trading at the fort, he also established a lumber mill and used the power of the Clackamas River to run the saws. In the 1840s and 1850s, Oregon City was the destination for those traveling on the Oregon Trail. It was in Oregon City where arrivals filed their land claims.  Forestry dominated the economy until the 1980s. The last paper mill in the area closed down in 2017. Today, Oregon City is a bedroom community of Portland. 

The sender is from Portland and supports Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer, and Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League. As a Vancouver Whitecaps supporter, I am not sure I can get along with the sender (Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver are huge rivals with one another), but since Canada's greatest soccer player, Christine Sinclair, plays for the Thorns, maybe we have some common ground. 

I might have mentioned this once or twenty times, but I love these vintage travel poster cards. This one is from around the 1920's or 30's.  Portland is home to the Portland Thorns FC, who play in the National Women's Soccer League. They are affiliated with the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer. The Thorns were established in 2011. The Thorns are interesting to me because Canada's greatest footballer, Christine Sinclair, plays in Portland. Sinclair has played with the Thorns since 2013 and as of this posting, is their all time leader in games played, goals scored, and third in all time assists. Her Thorns have won the National Women's Soccer League three times - 2013, 2017, and 2022. For Canada, Sinclair has 331 caps for the senior team and has scored 190 times (the all time international leader - men or women). She also has participated in six FIFA Women's World Cups and four Olympic Football Tournaments (bronze in 2012 & 2016 and gold in 2020). Sincl...

The senders are from Roseburg, but this card comes from Clarno, an unincorporated community in northern Oregon. On the back of the card it says, "The Clarno area contains towering pinnacles and palisades of ancient volcanic mudflows. The 37 to 54-million year old Clarno Formation is world famous for deposits of fossilized nuts, seeds, and large mammals."

Eagle Creek is a small, unincorporated community in Clackamas County, and 60 km south-east of Portland. The name of Eagle Creek comes from a local stream of the same name, which was named that because of the large number of eagles in the area. It's been called Eagle Creek since 1844.  Carl is a tomato and pepper farmer. He says he's retired, but I would say he is semi-retired. He has about 2 hectares of land to grow his crops. The Burnside Bridge spans the Willamette River in Portland. It was opened in 1926 after replacing a bridge built in 1894. It has Italian Renaissance towers and decorative metal railings. It is 421 meters long and 22.5 meters wide. When the bridge is closed, there is 20 meters of space below for a passing vessel. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The Burnside Skatepark was started without permission of the City of Portland in 1990. It is found below the southwest corner of the bridge. The city eventually allowed the park to operate, but provides no funding to it. 

A great World Postcard Day card from Oregon.  Albany is a city of 57 000 in Linn County. Albany calls itself "the rare metals capital of the world." Mines produce zirconium, hafnium, and titanium.  Zirconium (Zr) is used as an alloying agent in materials that are exposed to aggressive environments such as surgical appliances, light filaments, and watch cases.  Hafnium (Hf) is used in filaments and electrodes Titanium (Ti) is used to produce a lustrous transition metal with a silver colour, low density, and high strength, resistance to corrosion in sea water, aqua regia, and chlorine. It can be alloyed with iron, aluminum, vanadium, and molybdenum to produce strong, lightweight alloys for aerospace, military, industrial processes, automotive, agriculture, medical prostheses, orthopaedic implants, dental and endodontic instruments, dental implants, sporting goods, jewelry, mobile phones, and other applications. 

Beaverton is a city of just under 100 000 people found just outside of Portland. Duncan sent me a card from the series Bibliophila  and its a quote from Frederick Douglas.  Frederick Douglas was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. He had to escape from slavery in Maryland and became a national leader of the abolitionist m ovement. He believed in dialogue to convince others that slavery was wrong and that former slaves should have rights.  He became the first African-American to be nominated for vice-president of the United States, and was the running mate for Victoria Woodhull, for the Equal Rights Party. Douglass, however, did not play an active role in the campaign.  Douglass was appointed Minister-Resident to Haiti by President Benjamin Harrison in 1889.
