I would love to tell you about the dog skeleton pictured here, but I am having trouble finding information on it.  Beaune-la-Rolande is a commune of about 2000 people. In 1870, it was the site of a battle during the Franco-Prussian War. In this battle, French impressionist painter Frédéric Bazille (1841-1870) was killed. Bazille had joined Zouave regiment in August 1870. He was second in command. At the Battle of Beaune-la-Rolande, his commanding officer was killed, which necessitated Bazille to take over the unit and lead an assault on German positions. He was hit twice in the failed attack and died on the battlefield. His father travelled here to take his body back to Montpellier for burial.  Beaune-la-Rolande was also the site of a Nazi internment camp. It was a transit and deportation centre for Jews. Eighteen thousand Jews were held at Beaune-la-Rolande with most of them eventually transported to Auschwitz to be murdered.  The Polish artist Zber (1909-1942) was held ...
