The San Francisco cable car system was established in 1873. Twenty-three cable car lines were established between 1873 and 1890 - three of these lines still run today. Most people who use the cable cars now-a-days are tourists. Commuters use modern public system methods. San Francisco's cable cars are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with one street railways named as National Historic Landmarks.
