Kassel is a city of 201 000 people. It was first mentioned in 913. It was a fortification at a bridge crossing the Fulda River.

The Brothers Grimm - Jacob and Wilhelm - spent  time in Kassel. First in 1796 to attend the Friedrichgymnasium in Kassel. Both brothers graduated at the head of their classes - Jacob in 1803; Wilhelm in 1804.

Jacob began work as the librarian in Kassel in 1808 with Wilhelm joining him soon after. It is here they began to collect folk tales and published them. They soon moved on to other positions, including as parliamentarians in the National Assembly at Mainz.

Wilhelm died of an infection in Berlin in 1859, while Jacob passed on in 1863.
