Kleve is an ancient town found on the border of the Netherlands. Kleve is where one will find Schwanenburg Castle (Swan Castle). It was first mentioned in 1020. The Swan Tower collapsed in 1439. The Dukes of Cleves resided in the castle.
During the Second World War, Kleve was the site of one of the two radio wave stations. Luftwaffe bombers used radio beams from Kleve and a second station at Stolberg to navigate to British targets. Kleve was heavily bombed during the war and over 90% of the buildings were destroyed or severely damaged. As such there is very little of the pre-1945 city left.
