Great colourizedphoto of the Australian Soccer Team in 1922. This was the first national team in Australia and they travelled to play the newly formed New Zealand team. They lost two of the three matches.
It is generally agreed that Australia is the first country where uniform numbers were added to team uniforms in 1911. In 1912, New South Wales Soccer Association made it mandatory.
Australia did not join FIFA until 1956. They played in their first World Cup in 1974, and then not against until 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022. The men's team is nicknamed the Socceroos.
