What a beautiful card from Sapporo. The artwork was created in the 13th century CE, during the Kamakura Period of Japanese history. This is a time in Japan where the Kamakura shogunate governed much of Japan, but not Hokkaido. The samurai also emerged at this time, creating a warrior caste. Feudalism was also established during this time, too.
The Kamakura Period last from 1185, with Minamoto no Yoritomo 源 頼朝 as the first shōgun, and ends when Nitta Yoshisada 新田 義貞 conquers and destroys Kamakura during the Seige of Kamakura in 1333.
On 27 May 1293, a major earthquake and tsunamis hit Sagami Bay and Kamakura, killing just over 23 000 people. Kublai Khan and the Mongols also tried to invade Japan twice in 1274 and 1281, but were repelled by a typhoon both times.
