Veendam was established in 1648 as a peat colony by Adriaan Geerts Wildervanck (1605 - 1661). He founded the Muntendammer company to exploit a peat colony. Wildervank was also established at the same time. Today the town has a population of almost 28 000 people.
Near Veendam is the town of Westerdiepsterdallen. It is considered the smallest town in the Netherlands. For years it had only one resident and this was noted in the Guinness Book of Records in 1984. Today, there are five people.
