The Grand Hotel is located on Mackinac Island, which is located at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac within Lake Huron. It was constructed starting in 1886 and built by the Michigan Central Railroad, Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad, and the Detroit and Cleveland Steamship Navigation Company. It quickly became a summer retreat for vacationers, which, of course, had to use the three companies to get to the hotel in the first place.
In 1957, the Grand Hotel was designated a State Historic Building in Michigan. In 1972, it made the National Register of Historic Place, and in 1989, it became a National Historic Landmark.
Notable guests including Thomas Edison, Mark Twain, and five United States Presidents.
