Kampen is an old city found on the banks of the IJssel river. The name was first mentioned in documents in 1277, but there were already buidlings on the site. It grew quickly from a small town to a bustling trading town. In fact it became one of the most powerful and leading cities in northwestern Europe due to its location on the busy trade toute between Zuiderzee and the Rhine.
Today the remains of the old city wall still exist. The Bovenkerk, or Upper Church, also still exists. As with many of the large European cathedrals, the Bovenkerk took a few centuries to be completed. It started in the 12 century, and finished off in the second half of the 15th century.
There are many famous Dutch people buried under the church, including Hendrick Avercamp, who was one of the first landscape painters of the 17th century Dutch school. He specialized in Dutch landscapes in the winter.
