3783 - Hope, British Columbia, Canada

I've been through Hope many times in my life. It is the last stop before you enter the Lower Mainland in south west British Columbia. As a child, it always felt like the middle of nowhere when we finally got there.

First Blood, the first Rambo movie by Sylvester Stallone was filmed here back in 1982. It was a box office success, grossing $125 million in the domestic box office - the 13th highest-grossing film of the year.

It is about a Vietnam veteran, John Rambo (Stallone) who is coming to Hope (but set in Washington) to see a war buddy who died from the effects of Agent Orange. The local sheriff, assuming Rambo is a drifter, transports him to the outskirts of town, telling him to move on. Rambo starts walking back towards town so the sheriff arrests him. Flashbacks to his time in Vietnam surface when he is abused by a deputy. He fights his way out of the sheriff' station and into the forest. Rambo uses his knowledge of guerilla warfare to survive and set booby traps for the deputies. Washington State Patrol and Washington National Guard are dispatched to the area. Rambo steals a military truck loaded with a M60 machine gun and drives to town and causes as much damage as his could in revenge. Rambo finally gets to the sheriff. Just as he's about to kill him, Rambo's old commanding officer arrives and talks him down Rambo vents abaout the horrors of war and his traumatic experiences; being treated poorly when he returned to the United States; being unable to hold down a job. Rambo surrenders and is arrested by the military. The sheriff is seen waiting for an ambulance.

First Blood spawned many sequels:

Rambo: First Blood Part II

Rambo III

Rambo

Rambo: Last Blood

The Mob Museum, officially known as the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, is located in downtown Las Vegas. It open in 2012. It features artifacts, stories, and the history of organized crime in the United States, but also the actions and initiatives by law enforcement to prevent such crimes.  The museum is found at the former Las Vegas Post Office and Courthouse, which was built in 1933.  The quote on this card was from John Gotti. John Gotti (1940-2002) was the mafioso and boss of the Gambino crime family in New York City. After ordering the killing of Gambino boss Paul Catellano in 1985, he took over the family and led what was the United States' most powerful crime syndicate. He was known as The Teflon Don  after three high profile trials in the 1980s resulted in acquittals. Later it was revealed that the trials had been tainted by jury tampering, juror misconduct, and...

Keita is a junior high science teacher in Iwate  岩手町. He sent me a photo of the Tokyo Sky Tower during a fireworks display. The Tokyo Sky Tower is a broadcasting and observation tower in Simide, a special ward in the Tokyo Metropolis. It became the tallest structure in Japan in 2010. In 2011, when it was completed at a height of 634 meters, it became the tallest tower in the world, and the second tallest structure in the world, after Burj Khalifa in Dubai, UAE.
