Waldsassen is located on the border with the Czech Republic in south east Germany. It is famous for the Waldsassen Basilica and Waldsassen Abbey. Both buildings were built in the Baroque style of architecture.
The Basilica was built between 1685 and 1704. It was made a papal basilica minor by Pope Paul VI in 1969. The Abbey's history is much older beginning in the 12th century. It was founded by Gerwich of Wolmundstein, a Benedictine monk, with permission from the Bishop of Regensburg. It was built between 1128 and 1132. The second abbey was built in 1864.
