Wilhelmshaven is a coastal town of 76 000 people in northern Germany. It is found in Jade Bight, a bay of the North Sea. The German Navy's main port is located here. For that reason, Wilhelmshaven was bombed heavily with two-thirds of the town destroyed. The Polish First Armoured Division captured Wilhelmshaven on 28 April 1945. The entire garrison surrendered, which included 200 ships of the Kriegsmarine.
Today, Wilhelmshaven is Germany's only deep water port, and its largest naval base. In 2011, the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) made several changes that included reducing the number of military bases in Germany. Because of this reduction, Wilhelmshaven is also Germany's largest military base. The military base make up big part of the local economy.
