Bocholt is located 4 km from the border of Netherlands. It was first mentioned in documents in 779, when Charlemagne won a battle against the Saxons nearby. Today it is a city of over 70 000 people and is mainly a manufacturing town. Textiles are a main industry, but is declining. It is a leading manufacturer of transmissions for wind energy plants. Industries here are smaller and manufacture highly specialized products.
Bicycles are the norm here and the bicycle network is vast and convenient. In 2005 and 2006, Bocholt was named "most bicycle-friendly city in Germany" (for cities of less than 100 000 people.
