The sender challenged me to find some information on the checkerboard flowers. which is pictured on the front of the card. Checkerboard flowers, also known as Fritillaria, is a genus of spring flowering herbaceous bulbous perennial plant in the lily family. Species come from the Middle East and Asia and were introduced to Europe in the 1500s. There are about 140 different species divided among eight subgenera.
Flowers are usually solitary, nodding, and bell shaped. The bulbs have fleshy scales and resemble lilies. Today they can be found from the Mediterranean, North Africa, Eurasia, southwest Asia, and western North America.
