The San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association is the only major professional sport here. They were founded as the Dallas Chaparrals in the defunct American Basketball Association from 1967 to 1973. The franchise moved to San Antonio in 1973. In 1976, the Spurs were one of four ABA teams to merge with the NBA, the others being Denver, Indiana, and New York Nets.
The Spurs have been NBA champions five times - 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014. They have only lost one NBA championship series, that in 2013 to the Miami Heat.
Their alltime leading scorer in Tim Duncan with 26 496 points. Duncan also has franchise bests in most minutes played (47 368 minutes), most rebounds (15 091 rebounds), and most blocks (3020 blocks). He is third in career assists with 4225 assists. Duncan was also the NBA Most Valuable Player in 2002 and 2003; NBA Finals Most Valuable Player in 1999,2003, and 2005; NBA Rookie of the Year in 1998
The last five seasons have not been kind to the Spurs. They have missed the last five playoffs. The last two years they tied themselves having an identical 22 wins and 60 losses for a winning percentage of .268.
