Nymburk was founded around 1275 by King Ottokar II and it became an important and strategic town. During the reign of King Wenceslaus II, the Gothic Church of St. Nicholas (today Church of St. Giles) and the Dominican monastery were built. The town was surrounded by brick walls with 50 towers and two moats, fed by the Elbe.
Nymburk is home to Basketball Nymburk, the most successful basketball team in the Czech National Basketball League. They were founded in 1930 and have played under seven different monikers. They have won 20 Czech Championships - the championship of the Czech National Basketball League, and 15 Czech Cups - the annual national basketball championships for top tiered professional basketball teams, sponsored by the Czech Basketball Federation. Their last Czech Championship was in 2024 and their last Czech Cup was in 2021.
George Zidek played for Basketball Numburk. He was the first Czech player ever drafted into the National Basketball Association. He played college at University of California in Los Angeles from 1991-1995. He was drafted 22nd overall in the first round by the Charlotte Hornets. He had a short career in the NBA. He played for the Hornets, the Denver Nuggets, and then finished off with the Seattle Super Sonics before returning the Europe to play. He averaged 3.4 points in the National Basketball Association. In Europe he played in the Lithuanian Basketball League, the Turkish Basketball League, Liga ACB (Spain), Basketball Bundesliga (Germany), the Polish PLK, and finally in the Czech National Basketball League with Nymburk (2003-2005).
