Heilbronn is a city of 130 000 people. It was an important trading centre during the late Middle Ages. At the start of the 1800s, it became one of the early centres for industrialization in Württemberg. Air raids during World War II almost completly destroyed Heilbronn's old town, but it was rebuilt in the 1950s. It has a thriving wine industry nicknamed Käthchenstadt. In October 2025, it was named the European Green Capital for 2027 by the European Commission. To receive a European Green Capital Award, a city has to
- have a consistent record of achieving high environment standards;
- is committed to ongoing and ambitious goals for further environmental improvement and sustainable development; and
- can act as a role model to inspire other cities and promote best practices to all other European cities.
