Buchen is a town of 18 200 people in south central Germany. It has ancient roots dating back to Roman times. There was a frontier fortification known as Limes Germanicus built near Buchen and many stretches of the wall are still visible today. It was first mentioned in documents in 773 in the Lorscher Codex of the Lorsch Monastery.
Fastnacht (Shrove Tuesday Night) is an annual festival that attracts thousands a visitors a year. It has been held as long as anyone can remember. As part of the festival, it is compulsory to kiss the backside of the symbolic figure, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages, the Buchen Blecker.
