The sender was traveling by train to see UNESCO sites in Slovakia and Czech Republic. On this card is Spišský Hrad (Spiš Castle). This castle is found above the town of Spišské Podhradie and the village of Žehra. It was included on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1993. The area of the castle is 3.9 hectares.
Construction of Spiš Castle began in the 12th century. The oldest mention of the castle in documents dates back to 1120. It was a boundary fort placed at the northern front of the Kingdom of Hungary. After it's time as a boundary fort, it became the seat of the head of Szepes County in the Kingdom of Hungary along with the political, administrative, economic, and culture centre, too. It was owned by many kings of Hungary ending with Matthias Corvinus.
The Csáky family, who owned the castle from 1628-1945, abandoned the castle in the early 18th century. In 1780 the castle was destroyed by fire. It was partially reconstructed in the second half of the 20th century, and extensive archaeological research was carried out. The reconstructed sections houses displays of the Spiš Museum, which is also responsible for managing the castle and its artifacts (including torture devices).
