Pekan is the royal town of the state of Pahang. Its name comes from the the Bunga Pekan, a Malaysian flower.
Pekan is also the home of the state's royal family headed by Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah ibni Aimarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta'in Billah (phew). His short title is Abdullah of Pahang. He was installed as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (king of Malaysia) and Sultan of Pahang in January 2019. He was also a gold medalist in polo at the 1983 South East Asian Games in Singapore.
