This card is from Fort Worth, Texas depicting the Fort Worth Stockyards Historic District. It opened in 1890 and covered 83.4 hectares. Eventually more stockyards opened and then were bought out forming the Fort Worth Stock Yards Company. By 1907, the stockyards sold a million cattle a year. Cattle, sheep, and hogs could be bought, sold, and slaughtered here. By the 1950s, business suffered as livestock auctions were held closer to where the livestock were orginally produced.
Today the Fort Worth Stockyards consists of mainly entertainment and shopping venues that capitalize on the Cowtown image of Fort Worth.
