Jacksonville has a population of about 29 000 people, but is a part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has 730 000 people. The city was named after Nicholas Jackson, a landowner who gave the railroad the right-of-way to the Cairo & Fulton Railroad in 1870.

It has earned 13 conference championships, but have only been national champions once, in 1964.
