Hämeenlinna is a city of 68 000 located in southern Finland. It is home to the medieval Häme Castle (Hämeen linna). Häme Castle, also known as Tavastia Castle was originally located on an island, but now sits on the coast of Lake Vanajavesi. It consists of a central keep (a fortified tower built within the castle), with surrounding curtain walls (a fortification wall), and enclosed by a moat. Two of the original five turrets survived.
It was constructed in the 13th century, and restored between 1953-1988, and has been used as a military fortress, home for Swedish nobility, a prison, and is currently a museum operated by the Finnish National Board of Antiquities. It is a major tourist attraction in southern Finland. It is a popular venue for events including Renaissance fairs.
