Jyväskylä is home to the Air Force Academy of the Finnish Air Force, making it an important centre for military training in Finland.
The Finnish Air Force is organized into three operational Air Wings, along with the Academy.
The Lapland Air Wing, based at Rovaniemi Air Base, is responsible for guarding and defending Finland’s northern airspace, as well as supporting land forces. It also trains conscripts for aerial surveillance and support roles. Its main operational unit is Fighter Squadron 11.
The Karelia Air Wing, located at Rissala Air Base, is responsible for protecting eastern and southern Finnish airspace. The wing operates F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft as part of Fighter Squadron 31.
The Satakunta Air Wing, based at Pirkkala Air Base, focuses on maintaining operational readiness in southern Finland. It also plays a key role in developing air combat procedures and equipment.
Looking at this postcard, it’s interesting to think of Jyväskylä not just as a university city, but also as a place where Finland trains and prepares its air defence forces.
