Bremerhaven is home to the oldest operating lighthouse on the German mainland. The locals call it the "minaret," but officially it is known as the Bremerhaven Oberfeuer. One can find the lighthouse at the New Harbour of Bremerhaven.
It was built from 1853-1855 in the style of northern German Brick Gothic. It went operational in 1856. It was first lit by a gas flames and then electrified in 1925. It became automated in 1951. A building next to the lighthouse that served as quarters and service building for the lighthouse and lock keepers was partially destroyed during World War II.
