The sender is from Rockville Centre, a village on the south shore of Long Island, near New York City. It has a population of about 26,000.
This is a great tourist postcard featuring four attractions on Long Island.
Old Hook Mill (Hook Windmill) – The Hook Windmill is located on North Main Street in East Hampton. It was built in 1806 and operated until 1908. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and is part of the North Main Street Historic District.
Bethpage Black Course – I’m not sure which golf course is pictured on the postcard, so I searched online for golf courses on Long Island and came across Bethpage. There are five golf courses in Bethpage State Park, and the Black Course is considered the most challenging. A warning sign at the first tee reads: “WARNING: The Black Course is an Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only for Highly S
killed Golfers.”
Bethpage Black has hosted the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens, the 2019 PGA Championship, and the 2025 Ryder Cup. Golf Advisor once ranked it number one on its list of the 50 toughest golf courses in the United States.
Hither Hills State Park – This park is located near Montauk, at the eastern end of Long Island’s South Fork. In the early 20th century, the area was proposed for private development as a recreational complex featuring hotels, casinos, a polo field, and a yacht basin. The plan was blocked by the Long Island State Park Commission, helping preserve the area as public parkland.
Montauk Point Lighthouse – Montauk Point Lighthouse is the fourth-oldest active lighthouse in the United States. Built in 1796 of sandstone, it was automated in 1987 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
